Apple’s recent announcement that flash storage would be the standard method of storing data in the new MacBook Air generated a bit of excitement in the storage world. While Apple already offers flash-based storage options for its build-to-order MacBook Pro models, this is the first time the company has made flash the default storage method for an entire notebook line. At the press event, Apple CEO Steve Jobs pointed out that solid-state drives (SSDs) perform faster and more reliably than magnetic-based drives, making them ideal for portable computers. Indeed, flash memory has often been considered the wave of the future.  [ Read More ]

OLD HABITS die hard at storage manufacturer Seagate, as the firm has cautiously embraced solid state drives (SSDs) as it announced its latest financial results. Like every hard drive manufacturer, Seagate has been apprehensive about SSDs and, while its bitter rival Western Digital had revealed that SSDs were eating into its sales, Seagate chose to wrap one arm around the new technology by saying that it sees a big future in hybrid hard drives.

Apple has been near the head of the pack with previous technology changeovers. It was one of the first manufacturers to kiss good-bye to the floppy disk, and to leave chunky CRT monitors behind. Now, it’s flagged its intention to ditch traditional mechanical hard drives. Two new models of the ultraslim MacBook Air both come with Flash or “solid state” memory only. One of the new Airs comes with an 11-inch display (from $1477), the other with a 13-inch (from $1699). Apple says Flash memory is: • Faster – solid state flash storage is up to twice as fast as  [ Read More ]

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Keystone Mercy Health Plan and AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan have notified 280,000 Medicaid members that their information may be at risk after a portable computer drive containing the names, addresses, and health information was lost. The last four digits of 801 members’ Social Security numbers were also stored on the hard drive. The companies are remaining tight-lipped about the incident, not saying when it took place. They will only say that the hard drive, which was used at community health fairs, was lost within the companies’ corporate offices. Dr. Jay Feldstein, president of Pennsylvania managed-care  [ Read More ]

The headline-grabbing capacity of three whole terebytes is what really makes this Western Digital Caviar Green HDD stand out, but is there anything more to it than sheer size? With the focus squarely on the burgeoning SSD market it would be all too easy to overlook spinning platter drives. They’re not as fast, not as talked about and not as exciting as their solid state brethren. Ignoring them completely would be foolish though, as in most cases you’ll need a large hard drive to go alongside your sprightly, but slim, SSD. Plus, traditional hard drives can still offer a surprising  [ Read More ]

Flash / Thumb Drive / USB Drive Recovery USB drives started out as little USB flash disks but just as flash drive capacities have grown so has the need for USB data recovery and pen drive data recovery services. Originally these flash memory flash drives which were also known as thumb drives where a very useful alternative to having to transfer data from one computer to another by burning a CD or DVD each time. Flash drive capacity has improved far beyond what was imagined when the USB flash disk first came into being, when for example a 128MB USB  [ Read More ]
